How Posting on Facebook Landed Me My First Design Job

Transitioning into my first design job was challenging, as I had 5 years of experience in various careers like accounting and real estate management. My salary expectations were different, but I already had some freelance design experience and knew how to do print-based jobs. However, being self-taught on YouTube, I struggled with finding a position in brand identity and design.

When applying for agency jobs in Ahmedabad, most positions were focused on social media. Frustrated by this situation, I would bring my 23-page portfolio to interviews only to receive low-ball salary offers since they sought beginner-level social media designers rather than experienced brand designers.

Realizing that I didn’t understand the market or know where to look for opportunities, LinkedIn and other job sites weren’t helpful due to my lack of knowledge about relevant keywords. That’s when I decided to change tactics by posting on a Facebook group instead of actively searching for leads.

My post caught the attention of an admin who ran a design agency; he hired me despite not approving my original post! This marked the beginning of four rewarding years working full-time at his agency.

So if you ever find yourself stuck professionally, try looking at things from a different perspective — it could make all the difference!
